Chris Colvin, Eoin McLaughlin: Coronavirus and Spanish flu: economic lessons to learn from the last truly global pandemic, 11.3.2020
The authors, two economists, discuss the latest research findings on the 1918/19 influenza pandemic – incorrectly called ‘Spanish flu’ – and then compare them with the current Covid 19 pandemic. In doing so, they emphasize some important differences, but also point out significant similarities. Above all, the economic consequences of the influenza pandemic have long been underestimated because of their overlap with the end of the First World War.
